Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *eźis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰis (“hedgehog”). Compare with *ǵʰḗr.

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian ežys, regional ẽżis and Latvian ezis.
