Etymology edit

From *mъrmorъ (“small arthropod, tadpole”) +‎ *-ьcь. Probably via assimilation from an earlier *vьrmorьcь, from Proto-Indo-European *wr̥mis (“worm”) + *-orъ +‎ *-ьcь, or alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *merh₂- (“to grind, to rub”).

Compare also Ancient Greek μύρμηξ (múrmēx, “ant”).
