Possibly from a Turkic language, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *eker (“hunting dog”). Compare Southern Altai (Teleut dialect) [script needed] (eŋer, “hunting dog”), Chuvash акар (ak̬ar, “greyhound”) and Ossetian егар (egar, “greyhound”), also from Turkic.
