Proto-West Germanic edit

Etymology edit

Possibly from *þimstr (dark, dusky) +‎ *-ī (adjective suffix), with unexpected *m > *w.[1] Or, perhaps from Proto-Germanic *þiustrijaz, *þiuhstrijaz, from Proto-Indo-European *tewh₂- (to swell). Compare Proto-Slavic *tuskъ (gloom).
