Likely inherited from Proto-Edekiri *ɔ-bʊtʊ̃, perhaps equivalent to *ɔ-bɪ̃̀rɪ̃ (“woman, wife”) + *tʊ̃n (“new”), literally “new woman; new wife”. The ɪ/ʊ alternative forms likely stem from the alternative forms for woman, see *ɔ-bɪ̃̀rɪ̃ and *ɔ-bʊ̃̀rɪ̃.
