Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéw-tā-s or *ǵʰéw-tēr, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰew- (to pour). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬙𐬀𐬭 (zaotar), 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬚𐬭 (zaoθr-) and Sanskrit होतृ (hotṛ).[1]
