Middle Persian spelling
editgnc is probably the Book Pahlavi spelling, and gnz is the Manichaean spelling, not the other way around, please check this. --Z 08:28, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Possible borrowing from Chinese
editWild guess, but could this be borrowed from Middle Chinese 金子 (MC kim tsiX, “gold (especially used as currency)”)? Presumably this would have to be borrowed via trade contacts in this case, not sure if the historical record here makes this derivation feasible. Is there a plausible historical route for this word to enter Median and not other Iranic languages? The hypothetical timeframe also seems to be rather narrow, based on how the 子 in 金子 is read with to-on, as opposed to kan-on, in Japanese. The vowel mismatch seems problematic, though. scripts for Khwarezmian and Sogdian
editSogdian and Khwarezmian cognates have γ (gamma), not y. See for example p. 83 in W. Henning, "A List of Middle-Persian and Parthian Words", BSOAS 9, no. 1 (1937), and p. 297 in Martin Schwartz "On the vocabulary of the Khwarezmian "Muqaddimatu l-Adab", as edited by J. Benzing", ZDMG 120, No. 2 (1970). I will correct these two fundamental errors after posting this discussion topic. But can't edit the scripts on my phone at the moment.
