Reconstruction talk:Proto-Germanic/rēdaną
There is no mention of the Proto West Slavic "rada / raditi" (council, counsel, to advice). Polish rada/radzić are very common words.
It is not in inherited proto-Slavic vocabulary and derives either from Gothic or from a Proto West Germanic dialect (maybe OHG?).
Anyone with etymologically relevant information?
Original sense
editPfeifer says: "raten bedeutet ursprünglich ‘überlegen, (aus)sinnen’ [to contemplate, conceive], dann ‘Vorsorge treffen, für etw. sorgen’ [to think ahead, arrange for], weiter ‘vorschlagen, empfehlen’ [to suggest, recommend], schließlich ‘deuten, erraten’ [to interpret, guess]." This is quite specific, but at any rate a sense "to interpret" must have been present at least in West Germanic because both the Contintental "to guess" and the English "to read" are clearly derived from it. 92.218.236.20 16:37, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- The sense "interpret" is also found in Old Norse, esp. in the context of runes and riddles. Several inscriptions tell the reader to ráð rúnaʀ! ‘read the runes!’ ᛙᛆᚱᛐᛁᚿᛌᛆᛌ ᛭ Proto-Norsing ᛭ Ask me anything 19:55, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
