The reconstruction of this is still unclear, but it's certainly clear that the *-ēną suffix is not correct. After all, in Northwest Germanic, *ē becomes *ā, which leaves the attested forms unexplained. The High German forms must reflect *-ainą or something like that.

In any case, according to Ringe's reconstruction of this class, the statives come from the zero grade of the suffix, *-h₁-ye-ti ~ *-h₁-yo-nti. This laryngeal then vocalised when preceded by a stop, giving *-əje- ~ *-əja-ndi, later *-əji-þi ~ *-əja-ndi. According to Ringe, ə was lost before ja but not before ji, thus *-əji-þi ~ *-ja-ndi. Following this, j was lost between vowels, giving the result we reconstruct in our inflection tables: *-ai-þi ~ *-ja-ndi. —CodeCat 18:23, 31 July 2017 (UTC)
