From Sabus, eponym of the Sabines, Italic tribal name from Proto-Italic *saβnōs, *saβn-iyo-, *saβnyom- (compare Oscan 𐌔𐌀𐌚𐌉𐌍𐌉𐌌 (safinim)), from an uncertain Proto-Indo-European root, possibly *sabh-o, *sₑbho- (“one's own”), from *swé (“self”).
