From Middle Dutch scheminkel, from older siminkel (monkey, ape), ultimately from Late Latin *simiunculus or its feminine form, from simius (monkey) - or possibly a Dutch diminutive of Middle Dutch simme (monkey, ape) which is from a non-diminutive form of Latin simius.
