Etymology

edit

From Old High German Suittes (attested 972), perhaps from the verb suedan (to burn), referring to a spot cleared by slash-and-burn, from Proto-Germanic *swīþaną; compare Old Norse svíða (to burn, singe). See German Schwyz for more.
