Scotch-Irish pl (plural only)

  1. (US, Canada) The descendants of Scottish settlers in the Irish province of Ulster.
    Synonym: (UK, Ireland) Ulster Scots

Usage notes

edit
  • As using Scotch to refer to the people of Scotland offends them and is currently deprecated in British, and increasingly in American and Canadian, English, the modern term in both the United States and Canada is also Scots-Irish.
