Smilde
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
First attested as Smilde in 1846. Difficult to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a term cognate to smal (“narrow”), a derivation from Old Saxon *smeltitha (“soft swampland”) and a derivation from smele (“hair grass, Deschampsia sp.”). Compare Smele.
