Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as Smilde in 1846. Difficult to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a term cognate to smal (narrow), a derivation from Old Saxon *smeltitha (soft swampland) and a derivation from smele (hair grass, Deschampsia sp.). Compare Smele.
