Etymology

Borrowed from Mongolian соёмбо (sojombo), from Sanskrit स्वयम्भू (svayambhū, self-created).

  1. An abugida script developed by the monk and scholar Zanabazar in 1686 to write the Mongolian language. It can also be used to write Tibetan and Sanskrit.
  2. A special character of that script used as the national symbol of Mongolia.
