Etymology edit
First attested as die wijc in 1281-1284. Compound of Middle Dutch stomp (“blunt, obtuse”) and wyc (“farmstead, village, settlement”) or wyc (“inlet, side channel”). The element stomp may refer to a watercourse bending at an obtuse angle or an obtusely shaped piece of land.
