Etymology edit

  • (Zuid-Holland) First attested as strinen in 1167. Derived from a hydronym, derived in turn from Proto-Indo-European *stri (strike, hit) or *sreu (flow). An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from (a term cognate to) struinen (wander about, amble about).
  • (Noord-Brabant) First attested as 't huys te striene in 1323. Named after a former castle, which in turn was named after a former hydronym.
