According to Armenologist Armen Petrosyan, it goes back to the name of the sacred mountain of Akkadian mythology Mašu - "twin", which characterises the two peaks of the mountain (I can't remember which source)

As you can see, there are many conflicting proposals. This is always the case with old, non-transparent toponyms. When doing etymology, words are compared in two aspects – form and meaning. With toponyms you can only compare the form because you do not know the meaning. This leads to many formally acceptable, unprovable proposals. Leave old toponyms alone...
