Preposition or noun?

This is a notable topic of debate in Arabic grammar. Ordinarily in Arabic, a preposition must remain the same, no matter what case or position it is in. However, most of the grammarians agree that مع is a noun, or at least a "semi-preposition". This is because it can sometimes have nunation. An example would be the sentence "جاؤوا مَعًا", meaning "They came together".

By the definitions set out in English grammar, however, مع is a preposition. What do you think? This is an English encyclopedia, yet this page in particular deals with a word from Arabic. Which grammar consensus ought we to use - that of the native language, or that of the website language? And in any case, should we mention this topic of contention in the article body itself?
