Devoicing

(Notifying Eirikr, TAKASUGI Shinji, Atitarev, Fish bowl, Poketalker, Cnilep, Marlin Setia1, Huhu9001, 荒巻モロゾフ, 片割れ靴下, Onionbar, Shen233, Alves9, Cpt.Guapo): I don't think the first mora is devoiced but I fail to find any sources. My speculation is that the gemination prevents the devoicing from occurring (as it would otherwise occur for ピツ, see 鉛筆); it feels awkward when I try to pronounce ピッツァ both geminated as well as devoiced. It seem to me that it shouldn't be devoiced. Although I can't find devoicing or not for ピッツァ in NHK, but for ピザ, the first mora is certainly not devoiced, which make sense and should carry. Shen233 (talk) 15:34, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

• I think it's more that the first mora is accented / high-pitch followed by a downstep -- that prevents devoicing, since if it's devoiced, you can't really hear any pitch.  :) ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 22:09, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

  make sense, devoicing that occurs in words like 喫茶店,失礼 are possible because the first mora isn't accented.Shen233 (talk) 22:18, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
