Talk:American as apple pie

What is the origin of this phrase? I have seen unsubstantiated claims that this phrase came into use in the 1960's as a shorted form of "as American as motherhood and apple pie" — This comment was unsigned.

The expression may date back to the 1920s based on a possible newspaper quote (which I couldn't see in full). It certainly predates the 1960s as the quotes show. I had expected it to be older. DCDuring Holiday Greetings! 21:41, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
motherhood and apple pie may originate with this:
  • 1949, Virginia Code Commission, Code of Virginia, 1950, page 938:
Motherhood and Apple Pie day, observance in recognition of infant mortality
correction: Law seems to have been passed in 1989. DCDuring Holiday Greetings! 00:04, 27 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
