Etymon

edit

Assuming ๐„๐‚๐Œน๐Œฟ (triu) is the correct etymon, Latin Thervingฤซ is clearly metathesized. Schรถfeld supposes this happened already in Gothic and lists *๐„๐Œฐ๐Œน๐‚๐…๐Œน๐Œฒ๐Œฒ๐‰๐ƒ (taรญrwiggลs). For what it's worth, he also mentions such permuted forms as Virtingi, Teriungi, Terviginti, and Terungi, so there's no guarantee that T(h)ervingi is correct either. If more weight is therefore given to the supposed "๐„๐‚๐Œน๐Œฟ" root and the metathesis is instead assumed to be post-Gothic (an assumption that cannot be proven), the etymon would presumably be *๐„๐‚๐Œน๐…๐Œน๐Œฒ๐Œฒ๐‰๐ƒ (triwiggลs) (cf. ๐„๐‚๐Œน๐Œฟ~๐„๐‚๐Œน๐…๐Œน๐ƒ (triu~triwis) +โ€Ž -๐Œด๐Œน๐Œฝ๐ƒ (-eins) > ๐„๐‚๐Œน๐…๐Œด๐Œน๐Œฝ๐ƒ (triweins)).

This is just speculation on my part, but perhaps someone will find it interesting or useful. Wiljahelmaz (talk) 04:20, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
