amaxophobia

This English noun is defined as "fear of riding in a vehicle" and has one citation from 1908. However, considering that the more analogical spelling failed RFV, I assume that so will this one. — I.S.M.E.T.A. 17:54, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@Einstein2: Thanks. I've added the citation from your first link to Citations:amaxophobia, but I believe that that's a mention, not a use. As for the second link, it doesn't have a preview when I access it. The entry still only has the one CFI-valid citation (the 1908 one), I'm afraid. — I.S.M.E.T.A. 20:47, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Is the following really a mention without a use? "I felt a little better about driving after knowing that it was a real fear called amaxophobia."

It is not at all unusual for a helpful author or speaker with an audience that consists of both those who know or can determine the meaning of a term and those who don't know it to add a gloss. In addition, there is a speech-act phenomenon involved in naming something: It announces that the underlying phenomenon has arisen before and that the kind of people who coin words have found it worthwhile to come up with a word for it. The quotation above illustrates the effect of naming.

All of which is not to say that appearance only in lists of philias, manias, or phobias or in dictionaries would be sufficient. Do we need some kind of BP discussion to solicit opinion on this. DCDuring TALK 14:30, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

hamaxophobia

The etymologically consistent spelling is *hamaxophobia, but that spelling is not attested outside word-lists and dictionaries.

This was added prior to 2016. There appears to be a source since then which mentions it http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2016/03/fearful-drivers-greatest-ignored-danger-road/

Mental health specialists have gone further by defining a variety of driving related phobias – vehophobia, amaxophobia, hamaxophobia, ochophobia, dystychiphobia, and motorphobia.

Should we remove that and consider restoring that page? ScratchMarshall (talk) 02:57, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
