Etymology, sense development

Given the derivation from verb csíp (“to pinch”), I find myself a bit confused how this came to mean "hip". A hip is generally where something gets wider and flares outward, not where something gets narrower and pinches inward.

I'm curious if this might have started out meaning "the part of the body where the width of the torso pinches", i.e. the waist? Or perhaps this was a reference to where, from a view of the body from the top moving down to the bottom, that "pinching" stops and the torso flares out again? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 22:03, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

@Eirikr According to Gábor Zaicz's etymology, the origin of the name is anatomical: the hip bone is kind of pinching the head of the thigh bone. The present participle form became a noun over time. Panda10 (talk) 23:48, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
