Latin Vowel Length & Etymology edit

Alatius' page mentions Romance evidence to the long vowel, but I haven't been able to find any. Greek ου is used to transcribe the short Latin V as well as the long one, especially on closed non-final syllables, and thus cannot serve as evidence on its own. Here's a selection of (O/M)French etymons which point to a short vowel - click on the etymon to read the full entry. Daris, Il lessico latino nel greco d'Egitto p.65 displays the spelling κοστωδείᾳ. There seems to be three placenames all pointing to the short vowel: Castuera, Costoja, Costur. I'm content with indicating that the length is uncertain, but I will again remove the mention of Greek ου as being misleading. Brutal Russian (talk) 18:21, 21 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
