But why holy?
- holy has been used in expletives since the 1880s (holy smoke, 1883; holy mackerel, 1876; holy cow, 1914; holy moly, etc.). They are euphemisms for holy Christ or holy Moses. —Stephen (Talk) 23:08, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
