I changed it to a postpositive adjective because despite what Merriam-Webster says I can't find any adverbial uses, it's always modifying a noun (as in the three citations we have already, the three on their page, "political correctness in excelsis" in the one pronunciation example on Youglish, and all the others I see on Google News: "Michael Bay in excelsis" [1], "Messi in excelsis" [2], "dissident-in-excelsis" [3], "rock-in-excelsis" [4] etc.). MW even have a predicative example, "eighties nostalgia was in excelsis". Not sure if "to the highest degree" is the right gloss ("eighties nostalgia was to the highest degree"?) as opposed to something more adjectival like "at its/their peak" and "archetypal" etc. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 19:59, 4 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Return to "in excelsis" page.
