Is it possible that the non Spanish-speaking New Orleans-based longshoremen, referring to scrapped autos circa 1920 destined for Jalapa, Mexico scrapyards, pronounced the destination on the palettes "jalopies" rather than multiples or possessive of Jalapa?

I was curious of a similar etymology but derived from jalapeño, in the sense of the bootlegger cars of the prohibition era being "hot", this leading into the entire hot rod (particularly rat rod aesthetic) meaning within "jalopy" of it being a run down old car that was a hot rod.
