Etymology

edit

The Old English popel (pebble), although appearing to be related, is not so, but just a later derivative of papol (pebble) from a different root; and please see the pebble discussion page. If Ancient Greek ψάω (psáō, to touch on surface, to rub, etc.) can be connected to the P.I.E. root in the main entry, then it is possible that Ancient Greek ψῆφος (psêphos, small rounded, small stone) might also be initially from that same root; but this is still dubious.
