Obsolete definitions edit

it seems to me that obsolete definitions should be placed last Cem BSEE 00:55, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

EN: transitive verb meaning "to cause to vary" edit

Is this usage as a transitive verb meaning "to cause to vary" / "to manipulate" / "to increment" valid? I can't match it to an existing sense in the entry.

"For measurements of excitation spectra the excitation wavelength was scanned from 230 to 380 nm at the same scanning rate, and emission monitored at 450 or 506 nm."

https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1149/1.2055033/meta Note also that the excitation is the 'input' to the sample; the emission is the 'output' that's read. Other similar examples are available, but I think the above is a quite clear illustration. —DIV (1.145.128.215 05:26, 12 January 2024 (UTC))Reply

EN: computing edit

  1. (computing, transitive) To inspect, analyse or go over, often to find something.
to scan the hard drive for errors

seems to fit under careful, systematic, sequential analysis to me, so I'll move it to the relevant parent sense. I don't know enough about lexical tokens, so I'll leave that, but possibly it should be moved too. —DIV (1.145.128.215 05:29, 12 January 2024 (UTC))Reply
