Could this be a misspelling of "welsh?" The OED includes that, with these given meanings, but not "welch." — This comment was unsigned.

Here in the US, it is welch with exactly this meaning; the word Welsh refers only to the nationality. --Connel MacKenzie 05:05, 28 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not sure if welch noun should be listed as a derived term of the verb (along with welcher) though. Looks like someone really screwed up welcher. Is it really an offensive term in the UK, when referring to one of Welsh descent? (It isn't over here.) --Connel MacKenzie 05:10, 28 November 2007 (UTC)Reply


According to my Webster's, "welch" *is* derived from "welsh," a disparagment on people of Welsh ancestry. Lady Blanc
