Usage
editThis template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Aphra Behn's work Love-letters between a Noble-man and His Sister (1st edition, 1684–1687, 3 volumes). It may be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive:
- Love-letters between a Noble-man and His Sister (volume I, 1684).
- Love Letters from a Noble Man to His Sister: Mixt with the History of Their Adventures. The Second Part by the Same Hand. (volume II, 1685).
- The Amours of Philander and Silvia: Being the Third and Last Part of the Love-letters between a Noble-man and His Sister (volume III, 1687).
(All three volumes are in the same file. This version of the work is slightly defective as some text is obscured due to overprinting—replace it with a better version if one becomes available.)
Parameters
editThe template takes the following parameters:
|1=
or|volume=
– mandatory – the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from|volume=I
to|volume=III
.|2=
or|chapter=
– the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value | Result |
---|---|
Volume I | |
Epistle Dedicatory | To Tho[mas] Condon, Esq |
The Argument | The Argument |
Volume II | |
Epistle Dedicatory 2 | To Lemuel Kingdon, Esq |
Volume III | |
Epistle Dedicatory 3 | To the Lord Spencer |
- As the above chapters are unpaginated, use
|3=
or|page=
to specify "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL ishttps://archive.org/details/bim_early-english-books-1641-1700_love-letters-between-a-n_behn-mrs-aphra_1684/page/n2/mode/1up
, specify|page=2
.
|3=
or|page=
, or|pages=
– mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:- Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this:
|pages=10–11
. - You must also use
|pageref=
to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
- Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this:
- This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
In volume II:
- Page 191 is misprinted as 193; specify it as
|page=191
.- Page numbers 192, 193, 387, and 388 are not used; the text is unaffected.
|4=
,|text=
, or|passage=
– the passage to be quoted.|footer=
– a comment on the passage quoted.|brackets=
– use|brackets=on
to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
