Usage edit

This template may be used to format quotations from a collection of Henry Fielding's works entitled Miscellanies (1st edition, 1743, 3 volumes). It can be used to create links to online versions of the work at Google Books:

Parameters edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=III.
  • |2= or |chapter=
    • In volume I, use this parameter to specify the name of the "chapter" or title quoted from.
    • In volume II:
      • In "A Journey from This World to the Next", use |2= or |chapter= to specify the chapter number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, and |chaptername= the name of the chapter.
      • In "The Wedding-Day", if quoting from the prologue or epilogue, specify |chapter=Prologue or |chapter=Epilogue.
    • In volume III, use |2= or |chapter= to specify the chapter number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, and |chaptername= the name of the chapter.

  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals as the case may be. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template determine, in some cases, the part of the work quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.

In volume II, if quoting from the epilogue of "The Wedding-Day", although the pages are unnumbered, specify them as |page=421 and |page=422.

  • |act= and |scene=mandatory in some cases: in "The Wedding-Day" in volume II:
    • If the page number is specified, in most cases the template can determine the act number quoted from. It is unable to do so if page 346, 371, or 392 is specified, in which case |act= must be used to specify the act number in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=II.
    • Use |scene= to specify the scene number quoted from in lowercase Roman numerals.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
