Template:RQ:Fielding Joseph Andrews

Usage edit

This template may be used to format quotations from Henry Fielding's work The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews, and His Friend Mr. Abraham Adams (1st edition, 1742; and 3rd edition, 1743, 2 volumes). It can be used to create links to online versions of the work at the HathiTrust Digital Library and the Internet Archive:

Parameters edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |edition=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 3rd edition (1743), specify |edition=3rd. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1742).
  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, either |volume=I or |volume=II.
  • |2= or |chapter=
    • The name of the chapter quoted from, or the chapter number in uppercase Roman numerals (which starts from I in each book).
    • If quoting from the preface in volume I, specify |chapter=Preface. In the 3rd edition, as the preface is unpaginated, use |3= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the HathiTrust Digital Library to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=inu.30000115426474&view=1up&seq=9, specify |page=9.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from (in the 1st edition, in either Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be). When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 (or |pages=x–xi).
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template determine the book (I–IV) quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
