Usage edit

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from the work Divers Voyages Touching the Discoverie of America (1st edition, 1582) compiled by Richard Hakluyt. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the HathiTrust Digital Library.

Parameters edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |author= and |authorlink= – if quoting from part of the work for which an author is stated, use |author= to specify the author's name and, if desired, |authorlink= to specify the name of an English Wikipedia article to link to.
  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from.
  • |2= or |url= – mandatory in some cases: as the work is unpaginated, the URL of the webpage on which the Wiktionary entry appears must be manually specified, like this: |url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.69015000005880&view=1up&seq=23. This parameter must be specified for the template to link to the online version of the work.
  • |year= – the year of the part of the work quoted from, if it is other than 1582, the publication year of the entire work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
