Usage

edit

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Philip Massinger's work The Emperour of the East (1st edition, 1632). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting a part of the work other than the play, specify the parameter value indicated in the first column of the following table to have the template display the chapter name indicated in the second column:
Parameter value Result
Blackfriers Prologue Prologue at the Blackfriers
Clavell A Friend to the Author, and Well-wisher to the Reader (by John Clavell)
Cockayne or Cokaine To My Worthy Friend, Mr. Philip Massinger, vpon His Tragæ-Comœdie, Call’d The Emperour of the East (by Aston Cockayne)
Court Prologue Prologue at Court
Epilogue Epilogue
Epistle Dedicatorie To the Right Honorable, and My Especiall Good Lord, Iohn Lord Mohune, Baron of Okehapton, &c.
Singleton To My True Friend, and Kinsman: Philip Massinger (by William Singleton)
As the work is unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" which the Internet Archive ("IA") has assigned to the URL of the webpage to be linked to, as explained below. (For the dedication by John Clavell, "Prologue at Court", and the epilogue, the template can determine the URL to be linked to.)
  • |1= or |scene=mandatory: the scene number of the play quoted from in lowercase Roman numerals.
  • |2= or |page=mandatory in some cases: as the work is unpaginated, use this parameter to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive ("IA") to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/emperourofeasttr00mass/page/n10/mode/1up, specify |page=10. This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the act number (I–V) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: in most cases, if the IA page number quoted from is specified, the template can determine the act number of the play. However, the template is unable to do this if IA page 27, 59, or 78 is quoted from. In these cases, use this parameter to specify the act number of the play in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I.
Act I
IA pages 10–27
Act II
IA pages 27–41
Act III
IA pages 42–59
Act IV
IA pages 59–78
Act V
IA pages 78–94
  • |sig= or |signature=, and |verso=|sig= or |signature= can be used to specify the signature number quoted from, which is indicated at the bottom centre of some pages. If quoting from a verso (left-hand) page specify |verso=1 or |verso=yes; if |verso= is omitted, the template indicates that a recto (right-hand) page is quoted.
    • If quoting a range of signatures, for example, "signature A2, verso – A3, recto", use |sig= or |signature=, and |verso=, to specify the signature at the start of the range, and |sigend= or |signatureend=, and |versoend=, (if required) to specify the signature at the end of the range.
    • If this parameter is omitted, the template links the URL of the online version of the work to the chapter name if specified, or to the act and scene numbers.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment about the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
