Usage

edit

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Vanbrugh's work Æsop. A Comedy. [...] with the Addition of a Second Part (3rd edition, 1702); the 1st editions of Part I (London: [] Thomas Bennet [], 1697; →OCLC) and Part II (London: [] Thomas Bennet [], 1697; →OCLC) are not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from the preface or the prologue, specify |chapter=Preface or |chapter=Prologue. As the preface is unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=gwlMRtd_BlMC&pg=PP11, specify |page=11. (The prologue is also unpaginated, but the template can determine the URL to link to.)
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template determine part of the work (I or II) and, if quoting from part I, the act number (I–V) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: in most cases the template will determine the act number quoted from if the page number is specified. However, if page 9, 20, 29, or 38 is quoted from, the act number must be manually specified in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I.
Part I
Act I
pages 1–9
Act II
pages 9–20
Act III
pages 20–29
Act IV
pages 29–38
Act V
pages 38–50
Part II: pages 51–66
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
