⟨ch·⟩ and ⟨j·⟩ (likewise ⟨g·⟩) are used to indicate [ʃ] and [ʒ] in words that have these sounds in all or nearly all dialects. Such words are generally borrowed from French. The interpunct, which is optional, serves to distinguish these graphemes from the ⟨ch⟩ and ⟨j⟩ (likewise ⟨g⟩ before front vowels) used in native words to represent a variety of sounds that vary by dialect. Cf. achetar.
