Etymology

Probably a learned Germanization of Latin Thessalonica. The -ch may be due to some analogy (cf. e.g. German Friedrich vs. Latin Fredericus). Alternatively, if going back to travellers (or crusaders), it might represent the Greek palatalized [kʲ].
