English Dictionary Hotlist edit

This list combines extracts from the indices of both the Oxford English Dictionary and the American Heritage Dictionary.

No single source was used entirely in the creation of this list.

Guidelines edit

  • Do not copy text from OED, AHD, or any copyrighted source. This is a requirement throughout Wiktionary.
  • It is not necessary to remove blue links from the list, although that is the favorite task for editors of such lists.
  • Remove blue links from the list only after all possible definitions are present in the Wiktionary entry. A given word on this list may have several separate entries in OED, each of which has several different definitions. For example: Wiktionary lists 93 definitions for the word "set", whereas AHD lists ~50 definitions, and OED lists at least 200 definitions.
  • If you are unsure about what to do with entries for obsolete terms, leave them alone for now and find other work to do. Alternatively, they may be moved to a subsection of the page, e.g. "Obsolete terms". While some users are against obsolete terms, others find them useful aids in reading old texts. There are plenty of other tasks to go around, so please avoid conflict in the list by discussing this on the talk page instead.
  • A list this large will take a few years to complete, so there is no rush. If 100 links were addressed each day, the list would be finished in eight years, four months, and twenty-two days.

Special characters edit

  • Numerous entries in this list have special characters represented as letters inside curly brackets (such as g{amac}yatr{imac} for gāyatrī). These entries are from OED, and should be corrected as they are found. Read through OED's list of Greek characters and other special characters to find the proper replacements. For example, {oe} would be replaced with œ.

Alternate spellings edit

  • Several entries list alternate spellings in multiple ways, possibly by separating the spellings by commas, or with left parentheses. As an example, glittous, (-is means that there are at least two different spellings, glittous and glittis. It is easiest to simply check the OED entry for these to determine what the different spellings are (by reading the historical examples).
  • Parentheses may also imply optional characters.
