Proposed language codes for some Formosan languages edit

Kulon-Pazeh Problem edit

Kulon-Pazeh subgroup was proposed in Blust (1999); however, Kulon and Pazeh are two different languages.

Tsuchida (1985) stated that Kulon is an extinct language once spoken in Taoyuan, Taiwan, and might be closely related to SaiSiyat, which implies a SaiSiyat-Kulon subgroup. Li (2001) once mentioned the close relationship between SaiSiyat and Kulon.

Here I list some words of these three languages for comparison:

  1. 'dog' Kul. AHU, Sai. ʔæhœʔ, Paz. wazu
  2. 'one' Kul. huha, Sai. ʔæhæʔ, Paz. adang
  3. 'grandmother' Kul. ku:ku, Sai kokoʔ, Paz. apu
  4. 'husked rice' Kul. SISE, Sai. ʃiʔʃiʔ, Paz. lasu.

(Tsuchida 1985, Kulon and SaiSiyat; Li and Tsuchida 2001, Pazeh)

Nevertheless, Kulon, Pazeh might be close related languages and form a Northwest Formosan subgroup with SaiSiyat but they are not and should not be treated as a single language. Hence, I would like to ask for the split of the code "uun".
