Wiktionary talk:Main Page/Redesign 2007

Discussion edit

On FF 2, the "Wiktionary," overlaps "the free dictionary" slightly. --Connel MacKenzie 07:12, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Note this is very exaggerated if you, like me, have "Underline links = Always" set in Special:Preferences. --Connel MacKenzie 07:17, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
That certainly makes it a little more cluttered! But each to his own. Conrad.Irwin 10:33, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can you add some fluff to the midsection? The left-column "In other languages" greatly exceeds the page length right now, looking quite odd and unbalanced. --Connel MacKenzie 07:14, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Logged out, it is not as dramatic a difference, but is still left-long. --Connel MacKenzie 07:17, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
What kind of fluff? Maybe we could have a bar along the bottom that contains the alphabet, and take it out of the top - but leave the other links there? Conrad.Irwin 10:33, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can you please add an input box, like the one on vi:? Can you consider the layout of fr: too? And de: is also pretty. --Connel MacKenzie 07:22, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Done, The other pages seem to be different in that they have more pictures. Can you find any that we should include? Conrad.Irwin 10:33, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Very nice, thanks. --Connel MacKenzie 17:14, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to edit this page as you see fit edit

Conrad.Irwin 10:33, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Incidentally - if you don't like the colours feel free to take a couple of steps back and edit from here Conrad.Irwin 21:10, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Blue border edit

I like that blue border - is there some reason there are two sections that don't have it? I think they would match better if they did... --Connel MacKenzie 17:13, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Which blue border do you mean, and what about the backgrounds? I think the page looks quite good now. A revision with your prefered color arrangement could be made too and then compare them. Best regards Rhanyeia 16:29, 1 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
The preamble/narrative has no border, and the "Other projects" has no border. I think those two sections should match the rest of the pretty stuff. --Connel MacKenzie 17:59, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I prefer the narrative with no border, it is different from the others in that it is prose; Also, having the project links out of a box IMHO makes the project icons look neater, however feel free to edit it. Conrad.Irwin 22:24, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

IE7 rendering problem edit

The four "icon images" get clipped where they exceed the box boundaries, IE7 only...FF is OK. --Connel MacKenzie 18:02, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have fiddled with them (Except wotd) so that they are unclipped in IE6, I hope that will fix the IE7 problem, but please let me know. Conrad.Irwin 22:20, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Icons edit

Icons are now not in correct places, could you Conrad.Irwin have a look at it please? :) Best regards Rhanyeia 09:18, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Which browser (and operating system)? DAVilla 06:51, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Windows XP, both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. Best regards Rhanyeia 07:58, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
...and Safari. The WOTD icon is the only one not correctly positioned for me. It used to stick out from the top and left edge of the WOTD box, but doesn't now. This pushes the box contents down and right and does not balance with the box below it. --EncycloPetey 14:29, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have tried to fix the wotd the day image, but it is rather hacked into place. (i needed it outside the table, so it is not at the moment a part of the {{WOTD}} but that should probably be changed. Is that any better? the exact position may need tweaking slightly (the -ve top margin of the table in WOTD, or the -ve left margin of the image) Conrad.Irwin 02:41, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's better. Even though they are not in exactly same places than earlier I think it looks good. Best regards Rhanyeia 09:36, 8 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Audio and edit link edit

Template:WOTD could use the audio and edit links found in Template:wotd. DAVilla 07:05, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Odd. It had the audio link a few days ago. --EncycloPetey 14:30, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
There are several links found on the current {{wotd}} template that are missing from {{WOTD}}, in addition to the audio and edit links. These incllude the several links found at the bottom of every WOTD entry that allow access to the WOTD page, the WOTD archives, and the page for nominating new entries. If this new style is going to remain up throughout December, then all these features need to be fixed soon. --EncycloPetey 02:17, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
For some reason there are now several new word of the day templates, they mainly need deleting but we need to choose one to use (Template:word of the day, Template:wotd 2007, Template:WOTD) At the moment it is using WOTD. Also, I think we are going to need to use Wiktionary:Word of the day/Month day Year now that we are about to cycle around - unless people are happy to overwrite all the old templates. Conrad.Irwin 02:38, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, we don't. We've set the system up deliberately to cycle around. That way, if the template isn't updated by the date a word is to appear, we get last year's word on the main page and nothing shows up as broken. We call these the "recycled" pages, and we've already been using them for about 18 months, so we've already gone into a new cycle. --EncycloPetey 02:46, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I didn't realise that :). That means that we will also need to delete the templates that I incorrectly created over the first few weeks of this, and there also seem to be some left over from 2006 (Special:Allpages/Wiktionary:Word_of_the_day). Conrad.Irwin 11:05, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I can take care of that. --EncycloPetey 14:31, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Done. --EncycloPetey 23:02, 8 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

H1 edit

As noted in the vote there is an issue of the H1 top header appearing on Wiktionary:Main page but not on Wiktionary:Main Page for an unknown reason. I will add that oddly it does appear on Wiktionary:Main Page/Redesign 2006. Is there something special about the title? DAVilla 07:11, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, It is turned off by the site Javascript, but only for the current main page, so until we move this there it will stay (unless someone edits the javascript). Conrad.Irwin 02:18, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've updated MediaWiki:Monobook.js to allow for either title. DAVilla 04:57, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

THIS DESIGN IS SO MUCH BETTER edit

UPDATE THE MAIN PAGE WITH THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I cant stand the old one, this finally looks inviting!!! --86.5.110.221 05:00, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

The people who have worked on it will be happy to hear that. We have run a vote to use it, and you should see it in place in 24-36 hours. Thanks, Robert Ullmann 05:13, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

main page for wiktionary day edit

from my talk page Robert Ullmann 06:54, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Keep in mind that 12 December starts in the Pacific at about 1100 UTC on 11 December ;-) Robert Ullmann 05:11, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

As far as the word of the day is concerned, it starts at 0:00 UTC. Ironically, I will be somewhere over the Pacific myself at exactly that time. If you want to do the switch at a more convenient time, just update those links (the one in Mediawiki as well as any redirects) and change Wiktionary:Word of the day/December 11 to use {{WOTD}} instead of {{wotd}}. DAVilla 06:33, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
You weren't planning on moving the new design over the existing page name? Ouch! Not good. Should be a move op, with the Mediawiki link and the redirects left alone. Do you have any idea how many links there are from outside the en.wikt?
Glad I brought this up ... Robert Ullmann 06:40, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
For example, http://wiktionary.org links to http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Main_Page changing the local link(s) is out of the question. (we won't even discuss the iwiki links on 170+ other wikts) Robert Ullmann 06:46, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
A redirect from Wiktionary:Main Page couldn't handle all of those? Anyways, I won't be doing the switch, so however you think it best. DAVilla 06:48, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
And you plan on eventually removing the redirect how? Surely you weren't thinking of leaving it that way?
It should just be move op, with a bit of care to keep the page history attached to the relevant version. Robert Ullmann 06:52, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sequence should be, sometime after 00:01 UTC on the 11th:

  1. edit new design to use current day (not Dec 12) for wotd
  2. move Main Page to Main Page/Old 2007 (not moving talk page)
  3. move Main page to Main Page (over redirect, not talk page)
  4. edit wotd for Dec 11 to use {WOTD} instead of {wotd}
  5. purge Main Page (force wotd box update)

The only transition gap is that between 3 and 4-5, the new design will have the old wotd box. This can be reversed, with the new wotd box appearing in the old design momentarily: do step 4 first. Could also be done today (10th), changing the 11th's wotd at some point. Robert Ullmann 07:19, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

It would make more sense to edit wotd Dec 11 to use WOTD before step 3, this would mean that the cache will probably keep the page looking right most of the time. Oh how much I wish I could do this myself... Conrad.Irwin 18:13, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is it too late to change something? edit

erk. Sorry about not saying something before. I don't have major concerns with the design, but I did just notice one thing today that I haven't noticed before. I very much dislike the "Behind the scenes" pages being presented as dictionary definitions. As the main page for Wiktionary and the place where new readers will land first, I find this a confusing presentation, since it looks like they are real words. On the other hand, if the reader makes the obvious connection that they are not dictionary words, but is still a new reader unfamiliar with our format, the "n pl"s and the numberings are weird, since there is no context of a dictionary entry here. It also offends my lexicographical soul, since these terms clearly cannot be attested. ;-) I don't think the cuteness factor is worth not just simplifying these to read "Community portal – A page containing everything you wanted to know about Wiktionary." or somesuch. Has this been brought up before; does anyone have a major problem with altering that? Dmcdevit·t 14:11, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Of course we want to keep looking at improvements, that's why this is set temporary. We want to keep it completely stable for the next 48 hours (Wiktionary Day), and then discuss what we can do better. I agree that is a bit too "cute". We have a WOTD as a dictionary entry anyway. (and a real one ;-)
Other than that, it isn't "frozen" any more than the main page design ever was. And all will be input to a vote to keep it more than temporarily. (I don't think anyone will want to go back, we'll decide which way forward ;-) Robert Ullmann 14:36, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I tried editing it, removing the n and n pl, changing :# to :*, and looking at the preview; it looks fine. (and has the same vertical/horizontal spacing, etc, etc). See what others might think. Robert Ullmann 14:42, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree to change this. Best regards Rhanyeia 17:55, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay, since this isn't going to break anything (like fiddling with a template or something), I'm going to change it; it can always be reverted. Robert Ullmann 06:30, 12 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
