In my locale this means to make the target of ones actions, with negative implications; e.g. "he has been gunning for me since he got here, he wants my job". I am not familiar with the cheering on sense, is that an additional sense? - [The]DaveRoss 23:56, 31 January 2011 (UTC) See these quotes:
