Dutch edit

Etymology edit

Potentially attested as uaroht in 918-948, attested with certainty as fortrapa in 922. If the oldest attestation refers to the current settlement, a derivation from a term cognate to Old English faroð (beach, coast) or, alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *ferhô (evergreen oak, Quercus ilex) or *farnô (fern) suffixed with *-oþ. If the oldest attestation does not refer to the current settlement, a derivation from Old Dutch *apa (river, watercourse) is possible.
