A latinized form of Borbetomagus under influence from -ātus (“forming adjectives”) + -ia (“forming place names”), from a Gaulish name of uncertain origin but generally taken to refer to the Celtic god Borvo or to a river, spring, or other waters named for him + Proto-Celtic *magos (“field, plain”).
