From Middle High German winde, from Old High German *winta, *winda (in wazzarwinta), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *windaną (to wind). Cognate with German Winde.

From Old High German wan m, alternative form of wanna f, from Latin vannus. Natively a masculine used only in the sense of “winnowing basket” (compare Dutch wan); the generalised sense “tub” and alternative feminine gender after German Wanne.
