First attested as de wisepe and wesepe in 1200. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of Proto-Germanic *wese- (pasture) or *wisi- (good) and *apa (river, stream). A derivation from Proto-Indo-European *wis- (flow, flow away) or *weis- is also possible. Compare Weesp, Wezep and Wezup.
