These are the rules concerning transliteration in Greek entries.

  • The transliteration of Greek letters into Roman characters is not intended to provide a phonetic representation of a word. The correct place for that is under the Pronunciation heading.
  • Equivalences have been sought amongst data produced by librarians and geographers, professional people who need to transliterate names: for use in library catalogues, in gazetteers and for the labelling of maps, places where a reproducible methodology is essential. Due to the nature of Greek spelling, transliteration is often irreversible.
