Wiktionary Logo
The logo in the top-left corner seems to have the pronunciation listing as "WIK-shun-ree". The way I always pronounce Wiktionary (and of course dictionary) is approximately "WIK-shun-AY-ree", "WIK-shun-EH-ree", or "WIK-shun-ER-ee". I assume this pronunciation is popular, at least in the US, for American Heritage always has its titles as dic*tion*a*ry (four syllables), not dic*tion*ary (three syllables). It'd be nice if the logo were fixed or, if the wik-shun-ree pronunciation is possible, lists wik-shun-ay-ree as an alternative pronunciation. --en:User:Geoffrey 03:37, 31 Aug 2003 (UTC)
- An established procedure in Wikipedia has been to allow for the fact that words are pronounced differently in the United States and England. In doing that we respect the way that others do it by accepting whichever version is first used in an article. In this case a British pronunciation just happened to be used first. The Modern American pronunciation of this word is /'wIk-S@-ne-ri/ (i.e. WIK-shun-air-ree), with the "r" representing a retroflex approximant. -Jordan
Looking through the International Phonetic Alphabet, I believe the proper phonetic transcription for "Wiktionary" in American English would be [ˈwɪkʃəˌnɛɹi]. Denelson83 07:19, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Correct IPA for British and American versions
Technically, /r/ is IPA for a trilled "r," and the sort of "r" we hear in English is /ɹ/. While it is often the convention of English-speaking phoneticians to use /r/ for the English sound, I feel this is inappropriate in a dictionary that offers translations in other languages.
The British version currently appearing in the logo should at least be corrected to [ˈwɪkʃənˌɹɪ]. Should we ever decide to put both the British and American spelling in the logo, the American transcription should be [ˈwɪkʃəˌnɛɹɪ].
I'll leave it to others to discuss whether /slashes/ (for broad transcription) or [square brackets] (for narrow transcription) should be used in this situation. Minetruly 03:33, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
