From an East Slavic descendant of Proto-Slavic *vьlkъ (wolf). Alternatively, from Polish wołek (small ox), Lower Sorbian wołk (small ox), or a cognate in another Slavic language, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *volъ.

Suffix: From Polish -owicz or the Polish rendering of a cognate from another Slavic language, e.g. Belarusian -віч (-vič).
